چکیده

BACKGROUND Recent findings indicate that symptomatic heart disease in patients with diabetes mellitus predicts poor prognosis, but cardiac involvement may occur before clinical manifestation. Diastolic dysfunction may be the first stage of diabetic cardiomyopathy. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate the cardiovascular function in patients with DM in early stages. METHODS we studied a group of 62 patients, males and females, aged between 51 and 65 years old, with well-controlled DM; they were investigated using transthoracic echocardiography (TTE). Two dimensional, pulsed Doppler techniques were used to asses the systolic and diastolic function for left ventricle (LV). RESULTS none of the patients had any clinical signs of cardiac involvement, nor ECG or TTE systolic function impairment. There are significant differences between DM patients and control group for peak A velocity (0.72 +/- 0.19 vs 0.56 +/- 0.29, P=0.05) and E/A ratio (1.03 +/- 0.29 vs 1.51 +/- 0.26, P = 0.01) which account for filling impairment of LV. CONCLUSIONS the analysis of DM heart disease, mainly at a preclinical level, is important in all the cases as an asymptomatic patient may have diastolic dysfunction which can be treated and should be closer observed.

Comparison of Fetal Echocardiography for Fetal Cardiac Structure in Women with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus and Normal Pregnancies

BackgroundIncreased metabolic rate of hyperglycemia in gestational diabetes causes macrosomia, which can also affect the fetal heart. The thickness of the walls of the heart and its function in women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) can change over time before treatment. We aimed to evaluate fetal cardiac structure in terms of ventricular wall thickness and its function in women w...

Magnetic resonance assessment of aortic pulse wave velocity, aortic distensibility, and cardiac function in uncomplicated type 2 diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) may augment arterial stiffening and thereby modulates left ventricular (LV) function. Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) is well suited to assess aortic pulse wave velocity (PWV) and aortic distensibility, both markers of arterial stiffness, without the use of geometric assumptions. Furthermore, CMR is a reliable method for assessing left ventricul...

Right ventricular function and dimensions in type 2 diabetes mellitus

Background Right ventricular (RV) function has proven to be of importance for patient risk stratification in heart failure and is associated with sudden death and exercise limitation. RV dysfunction might play an important role in diabetic cardiomyopathy. We therefore assessed RV function and volumes using MRI in patients with otherwise uncomplicated type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and compare...

Hearing Status in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus According to Blood-Sugar Control: A Comparative Study

Introduction: It seems that diabetes mellitus (DM) can affect the auditory system due to neuropathy, micro-vascular complications, and hearing cell damage during hyperglycemic states. In the current study, we aimed to compare hearing status in patients with type 2 DM (T2DM) according to their blood-sugar control status.   Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out in 104 ...

Evaluation of left and right ventricular functions using conventional and tissue Doppler echocardiography in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND The aim of the study was the evaluation of the effects of glycemic control in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes on cardiac functions. METHODS Diabetic patients were divided into two groups as well-controlled and poorly controlled patients. All patients underwent M-mode, two-dimensions (2D), pulsed wave (PW) Doppler, and tissue Doppler (TDI) echocardiography to evaluate ...
